Essential to Life
Life is hard to imagine without chemicals and the chemical industry. The basic substances and products that form modern life are chemicals. The chemical industry is responsible for the food we eat; the clothes we wear and the detergents we wash them in; the cars we drive and the roads we drive them on; the buildings we live and work in; and even the ink and paper that produce our books, magazines and newspapers.
Our industry is an integral part of the world economy. As a major contributor to the global economy, Chemtura Corporation adds value to our customers' products. As residents of a world with finite resources, we must live with the results of our production. We believe that as we produce products that benefit people's lives around the world, we are obligated to produce those products with environmentally sound methods.

Our Commitment
Chemtura is committed to Responsible Care®, the chemical industry's voluntary initiative to protect the environment; ensure the safety and security of its operations; and safeguard the health and safety of employees and the communities in which we live and work. Under Responsible Care®, we pledge to be stewards of our products from manufacturing and handling to transport and disposal.
Our Safety Health & Environmental Policy states our commitment.
Responsible Care®, established in 1988, has resulted in significant reductions in releases to air, land and water; major improvements in workplace and community safety; and expanded programs to research and test chemicals for potential health and environmental impacts.
Responsible Care continues to strengthen its commitments and enhance the public credibility of the industry.
New program enhancements adopted by the American Chemistry Council as a condition of membership include:
- A Responsible Care Management System (RCMS);
- An independent third-party certification of the management system to ensure appropriate actions are taken to improve performance;
- Tracking and publicly reporting performance based on economic, environmental, health and safety, societal and product-related metrics;
- A Security Code that helps protect people, property, products, processes, information and information systems by enhancing security throughout the chemical industry value chain.
The Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) includes 106 management practices that are based on the best practices of leading private sector companies, initiatives developed through the Global Environmental Management Initiative, International Standards Organization and other bodies, and requirements of national regulatory authorities.

Community Member
As a Responsible Care company, we view ourselves as members of the communities where we operate. In many of our locations, we work with Community Advisory Panels to communicate with our neighbors about our operations and our programs to protect the environment. We respond to concerns about our facilities and work with local emergency responders to further improve community safety and health.

Reporting Our Progress
The Responsible Care Management System establishes a set of uniform industrywide metrics to measure individual company and industry performance. The measures will enable member companies to identify areas for continuous improvement and provide a means for the public to track individual company and industry performance in an accessible and transparent way.
Chemtura seeks to be transparent in reporting our performance to the public, including our Monthly Safety Statistics.
Our goal is to make continuous progress toward our vision of no accidents, injuries or harm to the environment.
A key priority for Chemtura in 2006 is to undergo a comprehensive, independent auditing process to ensure our Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) meets or exceeds the standards applicable to our operations.
Our vision is to be the world’s best specialty chemicals company and our dedication to Responsible Care is one aspect of being the best.
