Groundwater Conservation
In El Dorado, Arkansas (USA), Great Lakes collaborated with Lion Oil to build a one-mile pipeline that carries non-contact cooling water and condensed steam from the Great Lakes manufacturing plant to Lion Oil’s refinery operations. This pipeline preserves two million gallons of local groundwater each day.
Methyl Bromide Recapture
Great Lakes installed its first commercial methyl bromide recapture system at a fumigation facility at Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport in March 1999. The system recaptures about 95 percent of the methyl bromide that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere following fumigation, without interfering with normal fumigation time cycles. The airport must fumigate certain cargo, such as cut flowers from South America, to prevent the entry of unwanted pests. A similar system has been installed at a major fruit-packing firm in California where strawberries are fumigated prior to shipment to Japan, and additional systems are planned for other operations.
Product Stewardship
At Great Lakes, we make sure that health and safety information for all of our products is clearly communicated, and that our products, when used as intended, are safe for users and for the environment. For example, in addition to safety data sheets, Great Lakes provides informational materials such as a Bromine Safety and Handling guide, and as part of our agricultural products business, we provide strict, comprehensive guidelines on the proper handling, use, storage, and disposal of methyl bromide products. We offer training and educational materials, cylinder tracking, cylinder returns, product recovery and recapture services, and technical consultation when our customers need it. For more information, visit our agricultural products web site.
Silver Performance Award
In 2002, Great Lakes’ El Dorado, Arkansas (USA), site was awarded the Silver Performance Award by Region I of the American Chemistry Council for our exemplary achievements on Responsible Care® initiatives. It’s proof that our efforts are being recognized not only within our company and our communities, but in our industry as well.
