For years, farmers have relied on Great Lakes methyl bromide fumigants to improve crop yields,
protect grain and other stored food sources from infestation, and eliminate pests from imported
crops. Great Lakes fumigants are regularly used to treat food processing plants, breweries,
warehouses, and grain elevators and bins, as well as railroad cars, truck trailers, and air
and seacontainers. And, our products are also used to eliminate wood-infesting insects and
pests in residential and commercial structures.
The use of methyl bromide has been severely restricted by regulations in North America, Europe, and
other developed countries, however the product continues to play an important role in protecting the
food chain. Methyl bromide will continue its important fumigation work in critical soil uses where
alternatives are unavailable. It is used for quarantine applications in cargo ports around the world
where raw agricultural and processed commodities and storage facilities can be treated quickly and
effectively to prevent transmission of insects and pests across international borders. And in the
developing world, where restrictions will not fully apply until 2015, farmers will continue to use
methyl bromide to improve productivity and crop health.
