Mattresses

Mattresses, futons, and many other sleep products are major sources of fire-related property loss, injury, and even death. Great Lakes offers a wide range of flame retardants that meet manufacturers' strict flammability test requirements, including those for fabrics and filling materials such as cotton batting and flexible polyurethane foam.

Contact our Technical Service group for expert advice on our products for mattress applications or see our Product Guide below.

Market Trends

  • Increased use of visco-elastic (memory) flexible polyurethane foam in bedding
  • Introduction of barrier fabrics to help meet flammability test criteria
  • Increased concern about the fire safety of bedding

Regulatory Updates

  • California TB 603, a severe large scale flammability test for mattresses, will be effective January 2005
  • There is an effort underway to adopt a more severe mattress flammability test in the U.S.
