Plenum-rated
cable is power or data cable that can be used within plenum spaces
that are also used for carrying environmental air supplies. The
more common type is used for communications (data cable) predominantly
within the U.S., due to different building constructions and increased
use of air conditioning systems. Plenum-rated cable has very stringent
flame spread and smoke production requirements as specified in UL910/NFPA
262. Great Lakes has various flame retardant additives for use in
fluorinated polymers such as FEP and low-smoke PVC, the main materials
used in cable insulation and jacketing.

Market
Trends
- FEP used in both insulation and jacket compounds due to its
superior signal transmission characteristics; whereas, PVC most
widely used only in jacket compounds
- Limited combustibility ratings push the market back towards
FEP based solutions
Regulatory
Updates
- Possible future move towards limited combustible compounds
which will restrict the materials used to FEP/PVDF solutions.
