Thanks to new product technology, Great Lakes Chemical Corporation announces that it will cease production of Penta-PBDE Flame Retardant by end of 2004 and transition to Firemaster® 550.


INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA (November 3, 2003)—Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK), citing years of research, advances in technology and a favorable environmental assessment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of what the company calls the “new generation” of flame retardants, today announced that it will voluntarily cease production of two widely-used flame retardant chemicals, penta- and octa- polybrominated diphenyl ether, by the end of 2004. California

California AB 2587: Bans Penta- and Octa-PBDE January 1, 2006 , and proposes the recycle of plastics with up to 1% penta be allowed until 2010.

California SB 50: Removes PBDEs from the reportable list of chemicals.

 

Maine

 

LD-1790 bans the use of Penta-PBDE and Octa-PBDE as of January 1, 2006 . The bill does not ban the use of Deca-PBDE.

Hawaii

 

HB 2013 bans the use of Penta- and Octa-PBDE as of January 1, 2006 . Deca-PBDE is not banned by this bill.

 

Minnesota

 

Currently, draft bills in Minnesota 's House and Senate address select PBDEs.

Massachusetts

 

Very broad legislation that includes prohibition on the use of Penta-PBDE.

 

New York

 

AB 9293 bans the sale and use of Penta- and Octa-PBDEs as of January 1, 2006.
